About this portrait
This cdv shows more than just an unknown sitter: it is Pieter Harting (Rotterdam, 27 February 1812 – Amersfoort, 3 December 1885), professor at Utrecht University and versatile natural scientist — biologist, physician, pharmacologist, mathematician, methodologist and hydrologist. He is best known for his biological work, his improved microscope designs, and his studies of the subsurface of western and central Netherlands; he was also among the first Dutch supporters of Darwin’s theory of evolution. The card is signed by hand ‘P. Harting 1876’ — customary at the time for collectible cdvs of well-known contemporaries.
