Henricus Germanus Josephus Mattheus Heijmans (born Utrecht, 1 March 1861) was a student in Utrecht from 24 September 1880. This 1881 portrait, made at the studio of J.H. Kramer in Utrecht, shows him in costume as a ‘Dutch horseman’.
Joannes Josephus Ignatius Harte van Tecklenburg (Utrecht, 15 October 1853 – The Hague, 4 July 1937), photographed in 1881 at the studio of Albert Lüssow in Utrecht, where he posed in costume ‘as the Lord of Hauteville’. He was an ambitious Catholic politician, initially belonging to the conservative wing, later a follower of Schaepman; a member of the House of Representatives for the district of Grave and the Catholics’ financial specialist. As Minister of Finance in the Kuyper cabinet he achieved little legislation and came too late with his proposal for a protectionist Tariff Act. By Royal Decree of 28 December 1894 he was permitted to add ‘Van Tecklenburg’ to his surname — before that he was simply called Jan Harte. Family portrait of Joannes Jacobus Harte (1823–1869) and his wife Anna Maria Theresia Mitschke (1826–1890), with their nine children. Among them is the later politician and minister Joannes Josephus Ignatius (Jan) Harte van Tecklenburg (1853–1937) — here still a child, not the standing father in this photo. Harte van Tecklenburg became an ambitious Roman Catholic politician: initially belonging to the conservative wing, later a follower of Schaepman. Through his marriage to a daughter of margarine manufacturer Jurgens he became a member of the House of Representatives for the district of Grave. He was regarded as the Catholics’ financial specialist and was Minister of Finance from 1901 to 1905 in the Kuyper cabinet; his proposal for a protectionist Tariff Act came too late to be dealt with. He closed his career with twenty-six years as a member of the Council of State. Contemporaries described him as ramrod-straight, self-satisfied and somewhat pedantic. Anthonia Jacoba Ockerscau (Rotterdam, 7 May 1821 – Amersfoort, 10 September 1878) and her husband Dionijs (Jr) Burger (Rotterdam, 4 February 1820 – Amersfoort, 31 October 1891). Dionijs Jr Burger was a classicist and philosopher, translator of Spinoza’s Ethics and rector of the gymnasium in Amersfoort (see also his own portrait in this collection).

Andreas Ignatius Schaepman (Zwolle, 4 September 1815 – Utrecht, 19 September 1882) was ordained a priest in 1838 and served successively as chaplain in Zwolle, parish priest in Assen and in Zwolle, president of the Rijsenburg seminary (1857), vicar-general (1858) and dean of Utrecht (1860). In 1868 he became Archbishop of Utrecht. He promoted Catholic education and liturgical renewal — he founded the Sint-Gregoriusvereniging for church singing — supported neo-Gothic church building, founded the congregation of the Fraters van Utrecht in 1873, and took part in the First Vatican Council. Christophorus Henricus Diedericus Buys Ballot (Kloetinge, 10 October 1817 – Utrecht, 3 February 1890) was a professor at Utrecht University and one of the founders of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) in 1854. He is best known for the law named after him, ‘Buys Ballot’s Law’, on the relationship between wind direction and air pressure.
This carte de visite was produced by Atelier Fock in Utrecht, the studio of photographer Arnold Nelius Marinus Johannes Fock (1846–1901), who was active in Utrecht from around 1867 to 1901. An exact date of the photograph is not known; the name is handwritten on the back.
This photo album contains the portraits of fellow students from the Utrecht student corps, collected by jonkheer Gustaaf Willem Mollerus (1842–1919) during his law studies. Later in life he worked as a cantonal judge and was active as a municipal councillor and member of the provincial states.
Mollerus was born in ’t Zandt (Groningen), the fourth child of jhr. mr. Johan Cornelis Mollerus, receiver of direct taxes, and Jeanette Philippine Catherine Conradine baroness van Imhoff. On 7 January 1870 he married jonkvrouw Anna Maria Jacoba Agneta Bas Backer.
