Produced by Fotografie Strauss, Rotterdam — founded by the German-Jewish couple Nathan Strauss (1863–1925) and Amalie Oppenheimer (1871–1933), who fled Königssteele for Rotterdam around 1904 to escape rising antisemitism. Their daughter Alice died in Auschwitz in 1943. Names in this photo are not known.
A man with a hat, cape and cane. Produced by Photographisch Gezelschap, Amsterdam (Singel 470 & Heiligenweg 34) — in existence since at least 1891. On the back a handwritten name and dates (1904/1905), not fully legible. Name not known.
The sitter has not yet been identified — a Western (probably Dutch) gentleman in tropical white dress with a cork helmet and umbrella, against a painted tropical backdrop. What makes this cabinet card unusual is that it was made not in the Netherlands but in Japan, by S. Suzuki (Suzuki Shin’ichi II, 1855–1912), who took over the Tokyo branch (Kudanzaka) of the studio from his father-in-law Suzuki Shin’ichi I (Masagocho, Yokohama). This is probably a Dutchman passing through or stationed in the region.
