John Orme Roe (Macclesfield, 1812 – Rotterdam, 23 October 1892) was a well-known writer and Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature — a society with around 500 members at the time, who were entitled to use the abbreviation F.R.S.L. after their name.
Anna Maria Theresia Mitschke (Rotterdam, 1 April 1826 – Hilversum, 15 September 1890) was married to Joannes Jacobus Harte, a merchant in Utrecht. The couple had nine children, among them the later politician and minister Joannes Josephus Ignatius (Jan) Harte van Tecklenburg (see also the family portrait in this collection). Here she is pictured with one of her younger children.
Dionijs (Jr) Burger (Rotterdam, 4 February 1820 – Amersfoort, 31 October 1891) was a classicist and philosopher, translator of Spinoza’s Ethics, and from 1857 to 1886 rector of the Latin school (the gymnasium) in Amersfoort. A contemporary wrote of him: “Plato remained what occupied him most, yet he was at home in the whole history and intellectual life of antiquity, and a guide to many. He also devoted himself to modern Greek, which earned him honorary membership of the literary circle Byron in Athens.” After his retirement in 1886, he continued to live in Amersfoort as a private citizen.
This double portrait shows Dionijs Burger (Rotterdam, 31 December 1787 – Rotterdam, 17 November 1860) and his wife Anna van Rijckevorsel (Rotterdam, 30 April 1792 – Rotterdam, 23 October 1862). Dionijs Burger founded the Rotterdam shipping and forwarding firm D. Burger en Zoon and served as United States consul. The portraits are reproductions of 1851 lithographs by Johan Peter Berghaus.
Anna van Rijckevorsel (Rotterdam, 30 April 1792 – Rotterdam, 23 October 1862) was married to Dionijs Burger, founder of the Rotterdam shipping and forwarding firm D. Burger en Zoon and United States consul (see also the double portrait of the couple in this collection).
Dionijs Lorié (Rotterdam, 4 December 1857 – The Hague, 28 February 1930) was the son of Adriaan Lorié and Anna Josina Burger. He married Cornelia Catharina Hendrika Kleijn van Willigen — a sister of Volkert Kleijn van Willigen, whom his sister Anna married. This portrait (studio A. Böeseken, Rotterdam) shows him as a growing boy by a balustrade.

Anna Josina Burger (Rotterdam, 8 October 1821 – Hof van Delft, 11 July 1893) was a daughter of a well-known Rotterdam shipping agent. She married notary Adriaan Lorié (see also his portrait in this collection). This marriage produced, among others, Anna (1856) and Dionijs (1857).
Adriaan Lorié (Rotterdam, 11 May 1820 – Rotterdam, 11 February 1882) was a notary in Rotterdam. He served as a commissioner of the Nuts Spaarbank and of an insurance company. He was married to Anna Josina Burger, daughter of a well-known Rotterdam shipping agent (cargadoor); the couple had, among others, the children Anna (1856) and Dionijs (1857), whose portraits can also be seen in this collection. Lorié was a son of Jan Lorié and Margaretha Johanna de Booij.

Produced by Fotografie Strauss, Rotterdam — founded by the German-Jewish couple Nathan Strauss (1863–1925) and Amalie Oppenheimer (1871–1933), who fled Königssteele for Rotterdam around 1904 to escape rising antisemitism. Their daughter Alice died in Auschwitz in 1943. Names in this photo are not known.
