A young Basotho man in traditional headdress with a feather, beaded collar and bracelets, holding a war club. On the back is a period ethnographic note: “Er zijn vier hoofdstammen van Kaffers welke onderling door vijandschap elkander vijandig zijn, n.l. de Zulus, de Basutos, de Makatesen en de Shangans” — “There are four main tribes of Kaffirs who are mutually hostile to one another, namely the Zulus, the Basutos, the Makatese and the Shangans.” Under King Moshoeshoe I, the Basotho formed their own kingdom (founded 1822), which in 1868, after conflicts with the Boer republics, became a British protectorate — Basutoland, present-day Lesotho. Jonkvrouw Catharina Cornelia Verhellouw was born on 3 February 1792 in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the daughter of Jan Verhellouw and Margaretha Johanna van Diepenbrugge. On 22 July 1819 she married, in ’s-Hertogenbosch, jonkheer Victor Carl Gerhard Dittlinger (b. 6 December 1787); together they had, among others, a daughter, Victor Dittlinger (b. 16 September 1825). On the back of this albumen print is a handwritten genealogical note with a wax seal, giving the date of death as 13 May 1866.
