About this portrait
Salt print portrait of Josephine Peters (Wiener Neustadt, 1790 – Peggau, 1866), née Hochsinger. She was a friend of Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert, and in her later years became the centre of a small artistic circle in Peggau, Styria. The back of this photograph carries a Czech inscription identifying her as a singer, godmother, and friend of Beethoven and Schubert — as far as is known, the only surviving photograph of her.
