About this album
Masquerade album of the Leiden Student Corps, containing portraits of members of a Leiden student society in costume. This society, founded in 1814 and located on the Breestraat in Leiden since 1846, is the oldest student society in the Netherlands. Masked balls and costume parties were a fixed tradition in nineteenth-century Leiden student life; similar masquerade outfits and photo albums have also been preserved in the archive of the Stichting Archief Leids Studentenleven (Leiden Student Life Archive Foundation).
The names of some of the twenty-five sitters are known, including jhr. Willem Regnerus Livius van Andringa de Kempenaer, Th.C. Gonsalves, Evert van Ketwich Verschuur and C.M.B. Grijseels.
