Kabinet Hille shows a growing collection of nineteenth-century photography — cartes de visite, cabinet cards, albums and more, with a core of Dutch and Dutch colonial imagery. Below, a recent selection from the collection.

    Andreas Ignatius Schaepman (Zwolle, 4 September 1815 – Utrecht, 19 September 1882) was ordained a priest in 1838 and served successively as chaplain in Zwolle, parish priest in Assen and in Zwolle, president of the Rijsenburg seminary (1857), vicar-general (1858) and dean of Utrecht (1860). In 1868 he became Archbishop of Utrecht. He promoted Catholic education and liturgical renewal — he founded the Sint-Gregoriusvereniging for church singing — supported neo-Gothic church building, founded the congregation of the Fraters van Utrecht in 1873, and took part in the First Vatican Council. He was a great-uncle of the priest-politician Herman Schaepman. Produced by Georges, Statuaire Photographe, Utrecht. Name and dates are written in pencil on the back.

    Hajo Albert Woortman Spandaw was born in 1836 (according to a family note at Kasteel Nauryck; externally confirmed: 22 December 1836 in Vught, North Brabant). According to the note on the back, he was a captain of artillery and Knight in the Military Order of William, and was killed in action in 1901 at Waterkloof, South Africa, during the Second Boer War, as one of the Dutch volunteers on the Boer side. Also noted: he moved in the circle of Queen Sophie. Produced by Hch. Kox, Kazernestraat, The Hague.

    Hendrik Pieter Lubertus Cornelis de Kruijff (Broek bij Voorst, 28 March 1840 – Arnhem, 22 January 1911) was an engineer officer and, from 1897, lieutenant colonel. This carte de visite is dated 30 May 1882, produced by De Lavieter & Co, court photographers to His Majesty the King and His Royal Highness Prince Alexander of the Netherlands, The Hague. His son of the same name (Utrecht, 1868 – Baarn, 1911), known as ‘De Kruyff jr.’, became the first president-director of the Centrale Werkgevers Risico-Bank.

    Jacobus Cornelis Anemaet (1794–1874) served from 1813 (as a Garde d’honneur in French service) until his retirement in 1856 as colonel, commander of the 2nd Infantry Regiment. He was knighted in the Military Order of William for his part at the Citadel of Antwerp, after which he was taken prisoner to France (December 1832 – June 1833), and completed 8 campaigns in 40 years of service. The back of the card is a printed overview of his military career; a studio stamp is absent.

    The name on the back of this carte de visite is noted as W.F.H. Kramer; further identification could not be confirmed. Judging by the beret with anchor insignia and the many decorations, this is a senior naval officer. The photo was produced by C. van der Aa & J. Chrispijn (‘Atelier Rembrandt’), Verdronkenoord, Alkmaar (with a branch on the Kanaalweg in Den Helder) — their partnership lasted from 1884 to 1895.

    Christophorus Henricus Diedericus Buys Ballot (Kloetinge, 10 October 1817 – Utrecht, 3 February 1890) was a professor at Utrecht University and one of the founders of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) in 1854. He is best known for the law named after him, ‘Buys Ballot’s Law’, on the relationship between wind direction and air pressure.

    This carte de visite was produced by Atelier Fock in Utrecht, the studio of photographer Arnold Nelius Marinus Johannes Fock (1846–1901), who was active in Utrecht from around 1867 to 1901. An exact date of the photograph is not known; the name is handwritten on the back.
