Christophorus Henricus Diedericus Buys Ballot (Kloetinge, 10 October 1817 – Utrecht, 3 February 1890) was a professor at Utrecht University and one of the founders of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) in 1854. He is best known for the law named after him, ‘Buys Ballot’s Law’, on the relationship between wind direction and air pressure.

This carte de visite was produced by Atelier Fock in Utrecht, the studio of photographer Arnold Nelius Marinus Johannes Fock (1846–1901), who was active in Utrecht from around 1867 to 1901. An exact date of the photograph is not known; the name is handwritten on the back.
