On the back is a period ethnographic note: “Er zijn vier hoofdstammen van Kaffers welke onderling door vijandschap elkander vijandig zijn, n.l. de Zulus, de Basutos, de Makatesen en de Shangans” — “There are four main tribes of Kaffirs who are mutually hostile to one another, namely the Zulus, the Basutos, the Makatese and the Shangans.” Under King Moshoeshoe I, the Basotho formed their own kingdom (founded 1822), which in 1868, after conflicts with the Boer republics, became a British protectorate — Basutoland, present-day Lesotho.
