About this portrait

Joannes Josephus Ignatius Harte van Tecklenburg (Utrecht, 15 October 1853 – The Hague, 4 July 1937), photographed in 1881 at the studio of Albert Lüssow in Utrecht, where he posed in costume ‘as the Lord of Hauteville’. He was an ambitious Catholic politician, initially belonging to the conservative wing, later a follower of Schaepman; a member of the House of Representatives for the district of Grave and the Catholics’ financial specialist. As Minister of Finance in the Kuyper cabinet he achieved little legislation and came too late with his proposal for a protectionist Tariff Act. By Royal Decree of 28 December 1894 he was permitted to add ‘Van Tecklenburg’ to his surname — before that he was simply called Jan Harte.
