Jean Etienne Vertholen was a cavalry captain (ritmeester) with the hussars. This photograph is dated Haarlem, 15 June 1867 — the year the hussars were formally incorporated into the cavalry. Produced by Ch. Binger & Co (Jesaias Charles Binger, 1830–1916), Zijlstraat, Haarlem.
Charles (Ch.) Binger (Amsterdam 1830 – 1916) ran the Haarlem portrait studio Binger & Co on the Zijlstraat from 1862, as successor to ‘Munnich & Ermerins’. The studio existed under various names (Binger & Co, Binger & Chits) until 1891 (source: RKD).
