Dionijs (Jr) Burger (Rotterdam, 4 February 1820 – Amersfoort, 31 October 1891) was a classicist and philosopher, translator of Spinoza’s Ethics, and from 1857 to 1886 rector of the Latin school (the gymnasium) in Amersfoort. A contemporary wrote of him: “Plato remained what occupied him most, yet he was at home in the whole history and intellectual life of antiquity, and a guide to many. He also devoted himself to modern Greek, which earned him honorary membership of the literary circle Byron in Athens.” After his retirement in 1886, he continued to live in Amersfoort as a private citizen.
